It's more complicated then I thought ^^
Apparently 5-7-5 was the norm but the original japanese haikus consisted of 17 "ons" which was traditionally translated as syllable but apparently is not exactly the same. Wikipedia states that some translators say 12 syllables have approximately the same length as 17 "ons".
So take a pick ^^
